BTG Adds Marcus Salem to Board of Directors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Bridge The Gaps Bridge The Gaps Welcomes United Airlines Captain Marcus Salem to Board of Directors.

Bridge The Gaps is proud to welcome Marcus Salem, a Boeing 737 Captain with United Airlines, youth football coach, and dedicated father, to its Board of Directors.

As a Houston based nonprofit focused on youth education, athletics, mentorship, financial readiness, and community engagement, Bridge The Gaps continues to strengthen its leadership with individuals who share a commitment to helping young people succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Marcus brings a unique combination of professional leadership, experience with student athletes, and a personal commitment to youth mentorship that will support the continued growth of the Bridge The Gaps mission..

From Aviation Leadership to Youth Mentorship

Originally from Oakland, California, Marcus currently serves as a Boeing 737 Captain with United Airlines. His career in aviation requires preparation, accountability, teamwork, communication, sound decision making, and leadership, many of the same qualities Bridge The Gaps works to encourage in the youth it serves.

But Marcus's commitment to leadership extends well beyond the cockpit.

As a father of two sons, Marcus is passionate about helping them become the best student athletes and young men they can be. He also dedicates his time to coaching youth football, giving him an opportunity to mentor young athletes and demonstrate the importance of discipline, education, teamwork, and character.

“Raising my two sons to be the best student athletes they can be is one of my greatest responsibilities,” said Salem. “I also enjoy coaching youth football. Leading by example and inspiring our youth is what I live for.”

Supporting Houston Student Athletes Beyond the Field

Marcus joins the Bridge The Gaps Board at an important time as the nonprofit continues expanding programs and partnerships that connect athletics, education, mentorship, financial literacy, career readiness, and personal development.

For Bridge The Gaps, supporting a student athlete means looking beyond athletic performance.

Young people need positive role models who can help them understand how the discipline developed through sports can translate into success in college, careers, entrepreneurship, leadership, and everyday life.

Marcus provides that perspective.

His journey from Oakland to becoming a commercial airline captain also gives young people an opportunity to see another career pathway they may not have previously considered. Exposure to professionals across different industries is an important part of helping youth recognize that their possibilities extend far beyond the field.

Why Marcus Salem's Leadership Matters to Bridge The Gaps

As Bridge The Gaps grows its impact throughout the Greater Houston area, strong community leadership remains essential.

Marcus brings experience as a father, coach, mentor, and professional leader, providing the Board with firsthand insight into the opportunities and challenges facing today's student athletes.

“Marcus represents the kind of leadership we want our young people to see,” said Omar Durham, Founder and CEO of Bridge The Gaps. “He understands athletics, he understands the responsibility that comes with leadership, and most importantly, he understands the importance of showing up for young people. As Bridge The Gaps grows, having leaders like Marcus at the table helps us strengthen our programs while remaining connected to the youth and families we serve.”

His appointment also supports Bridge The Gaps' continued effort to build a Board with diverse professional experiences and strong connections to youth and community development.

Building Stronger Futures for Houston Youth

Bridge The Gaps believes meaningful youth development requires more than a single program or opportunity. It requires a network of parents, educators, coaches, mentors, businesses, nonprofit partners, and community leaders working together to help young people succeed.

Marcus Salem represents another important voice within that network.

His commitment to student athletes and belief in leading by example complement Bridge The Gaps' mission to provide young people with the resources, relationships, experiences, and encouragement they need to prepare for their futures.

We are proud to welcome Marcus to the Bridge The Gaps Board of Directors and look forward to his leadership as we continue creating opportunities for Houston area youth.
